On early models, remove the idle speed actuator. Next, take off the air intake duct that connects the MAF sensor to the throttle body. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body linkage and from the cable brackets, setting it aside if equipped, and also remove the cruise control cable if equipped. If planning to replace the intake manifold, remove the throttle body now; if only replacing a manifold gasket or servicing the cylinder head, unplug the electrical connector from the Throttle Position Sensor or the Electronic Throttle Control and detach the coolant hoses from the underside of the throttle body. Disconnect the PCV hose from the intake manifold and the power brake booster vacuum hose from the air intake plenum. Label and disconnect all vacuum hoses from the air intake plenum and throttle body, as well as the electrical grounds from the right end of the intake manifold, then detach the wiring harness bracket from the manifold. For 1998 and earlier 1.8L and 2012 and earlier 2.0L models, remove the fuel rail and injectors; for 2011 and later 1.6L models, remove the electronic throttle body. On 1.6L models, drain the coolant, then remove the coolant pipe mounting bolts and pipe, replacing the coolant pipe gasket with a new one. Disconnect the electrical connectors around the intake manifold, then disconnect the harness retainers and move the engine harness out of the way. For 1.4L and 2.0L models, remove the air filter housing and air duct, and for 1.4L models, disconnect the coolant reservoir tank hose. On 1.6L models, remove the intercooler outlet hose, noting that on 2017 and later models, it may be necessary to disconnect the oil cooler hose at the base of the intake manifold. Remove the intake manifold support bracket by taking off the bolts, then working from the center of the intake manifold, remove the manifold retaining nuts or bolts gradually and evenly until all are loose, then remove them by hand and take off the intake manifold, discarding the old gasket. Before installing the intake manifold, clean the mounting surfaces of the manifold and cylinder head with lacquer thinner, removing all traces of old gasket material or sealant. For 2010 and earlier 1.8L and 2012 and earlier 2.0L models, install the new gasket over the intake manifold studs; for 2011 and later 1.8L and all 2014 and later models, press a new gasket into the grooves on the intake manifold, then install the intake manifold and tighten the nuts or bolts in a circular pattern, starting from the middle and working your way to the ends. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal, and when finished, check the coolant level and top up the coolant system if necessary.
