    Q:
How to check and replace the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensors on Hyundai Elantra? Posted by Customer
    A:
The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor is mounted on the air intake plenum to measure changes in intake manifold pressure as a result of engine load and speed together with transforming the changes into a variable voltage output. It also measures barometric pressure during starting ensuring the PCM can adjust to altitude differentials. The PCM supplies 5 Volts to the MAP sensor and changes in voltage across the resistor are calculated in manifold pressure for accurate delivery of fuel and ignition timing. To check the MAP sensor there is a need to back probe terminals 1 and 4 of the electrical connector, connect a voltmeter, turn the ignition to ON position/switch on the ignition/and check the voltage should fall in a certain range. Subsequently, do the voltage measurement after turning the engine on and letting the car warm up. However, if the voltage is out of bounds then the MAP/Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor has to be changed in this car. The Intake Manifold Temperature (IMT) sensor located with the MAP sensor, is thyristor NTC for given increasing air temperature of the thyristor's resistance decreases. The PCM transmits approximately 5 volts signal to the IMT sensor so as to determine the right fuel intake. For testing IMT sensor, first, you have to remove it from the plenum and having an ohmmeter connect it at terminals 3 and 4, take a heat source and heat the sensor, you will notice changes in resistance. If the resistance does not go down, then it indicates that, the MAP/IMT sensor should be changed. For replacement, disconnect the electrical connector, eliminate the nuts and unbolt the sensor and to reinstall reverse the process.
