Hyundai Excel Crankshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How is the crankshaft removed and installed on Hyundai Excel?
A: Crankshaft removal becomes possible only if the engine is removed from a car assuming other parts like the flywheel, crankshaft pulley, timing belt or chain, oil pan, oil pump body, oil filter, Piston/connecting rod assemblies are dislocated. Before removing the crankshaft on the test stand, use a dial indicator to establish an initial end play by placing the dial on the end of the crankshaft. Place the indicator blade on the center line of the crankshaft's snout and use a pry bar to push the crankshaft forward until the pin touches the back of the indicator and zero the gauge; push until the pin touches the front of indicator; crankshaft end play should be .003 to .010 inch. If a dial indicator couldn't be used, clearance can be done using feeler gauges instead. Turning clockwise, gradually rotate the main bearing cap bolts, take off the caps and, as the result-with the help of another person, because of its weight-lift the crankshaft out. For installation, the engine block and crank shaft must be clean and have the necessary inspection done on them. Turn the block on end; take the original bearing inserts out and scrub the faces of them clean. New upper main bearing inserts must be set to the block and the oil hole must be aligned and the lower inserts installed to the caps. Scrub the crankshaft and inspect it for oil holes presence and their state of cleanliness. Place the crankshaft on its stand, and determine the amount of oil that exits the main bearing using Plastigage. Mount main bearing caps without an attempt to realign the remains of Plastigage, apply clean engine oil to the bolts, and tighten in the mentioned sequence. Loosen the bolts and then put the Plastigage around the shaft and around the borescope ring and then remove the bolts again, and measure the width of the Plastigage against the scale to get the oil clearance. If clearance is too large or too small, check for cleanliness; think of a different type of bearing insert if needed. Following removal of Plastigage deposit, raise the crankshaft, coat all the bearing surfaces that will come into contact with bearing journals with a layer of thin grease or assembly lube and then drop the crankshaft back into position. It is also important that bearing insert faces, lubricant is applied and the corresponding surfaces of the mating faces are clean of oil. Tighten bolts until they are hand tight, then turn an additional amount to tighten to the proper torque value. Check again the crankshaft end-play and turn the crankshaft to see if there is any sign of binding. Lastely, fit the new rear main oil seal.
