To remove the oil pump, start by taking off the liming cover and timing belt for 1998 and earlier 1.8L and 2012 and earlier 2.0L models, or the liming chain cover for 2011 and later 1.8L and all 2014 and later models, and for 1.4L models, remove the timing chain. Next, detach the oil pan and the oil pump pick-up tube bolts, then remove the pick-up tube. Inspect the crankshaft front oil seal for 1998 and earlier 1.8L and 2012 and earlier 2.0L models, replacing it if it's leaking. For 2011 and later 1.8L and all 2014 and later models, the front oil seal is in the timing chain cover. Remove the oil pump-to-block bolts for 1998 and earlier 1.8L, 2012 and earlier 2.0L, and 1.4L models, or the oil pump-to-timing chain cover bolts for 2011 and later 1.8L and all 2014 and later 1.6L and 2.0L models, then take out the pump assembly and gasket. Clean the pump assembly with solvent, remove the cover bolts, and take off the cover. Note the mating marks on the inner and outer rotors before removing them, and then take out the plug, relief spring, and plunger. If replacing the crankshaft front oil seal, carefully pry out the old seal without damaging the bore. Clean all parts and inspect the pick-up tube filter screen for clogs or damage, cleaning or replacing it as necessary. Check the front case for cracks and replace if damaged. Coat the rotors with clean engine oil, install them with mating marks aligned, and secure the cover. For installation, clean the gasket mating surface of the block, install a new pump gasket, and then the pump assembly with retaining bolts. Attach the oil pump pick-up tube assembly and tighten the bolts, followed by the oil pan. Install the crankshaft sprocket, timing belt, and timing cover for 1998 and earlier 1.8L and all 2.0L models, or the timing chain and cover for 2011 and later 1.8L models. Finally, add oil, start the engine to check for oil pressure and leaks, and recheck the engine oil level after turning off the engine.
