To replace the rear brake shoes, start by removing the brake discs and inspecting the shoe lining thickness; replace if worn down to 1/32-inch or less. If desired, remove the hub and bearing assembly, though it's feasible to perform the procedure without this step. Clean brake parts with brake system cleaner. Follow the provided illustrations for step-by-step replacement: remove return springs, retainer plate, spread shoes, take out strut, remove star-wheel mechanism, disconnect shoe hold-down springs and retainers, eliminate lower spring, and detach shoe from parking brake cable. Apply brake lubricant to backing plates and star-wheel threads, then install shoes, springs, and retainer components in the correct order as shown in the illustrations. Tighten the hub nut and stake it to the spindle. Install the brake disc, adjust parking brake shoe clearance by turning adjuster star wheel, then install hole plugs. Proceed to install the brake caliper, wheel, and tighten lug nuts. Set parking brake with around 45 pounds of force and count clicks; it should be six or seven clicks-if not, adjust the parking brake.

When replacing brake shoes, be sure to also replace the shoe-to-shoe automatic adjuster and hold-down springs to prevent excessive wear. Begin by loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and removing the wheel and brake drum. Clean the brake assembly and remove the shoe retainer spring, shoe-to-shoe spring, and hold-down springs. Unplug the parking brake cable. Remove the C-clip, and remove the parking brake lever. Transfer the lever to the new shoe, reattach the adjuster and spring, and apply grease to the brake shoe contact areas. Reconnect the parking brake cable, install the shoes and springs. For later models, remove the brake drum, spindle cap, spindle hub nut, and bearing washer. Replace brake shoe components, reassemble the brake shoe assembly, and reinstall the spindle hub. Check the drum for defects, adjust the rear wheel bearings, mount the wheel, and lower the vehicle. Tighten lug nuts, cycle the parking brake lever, pump the brake pedal, and test brake operation.
