Hyundai Excel Fuel Tank

The Fuel Tank of Hyundai Excel vehicles is an important item that not only contains fuel, but the electric fuel pump and the fuel gauge sender are also located in this unit. It is used prominently in the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) to lock in the fuel vapors from leaking. These tanks are usually made of metal or plastic where the metal tanks are stamped out and then welded while plastic tanks are blow molded from high density polyethylene; HDPE. Metallic tanks are known to rust very easily, more so plastic tanks can crack due to shock expansion and vibrations. Racing fuel cells are protective structures that are capable of surviving impact and not gassing should they be hit; the most commonly used type is made of a flexible bladder of some sort of reinforced rubber or coated textile. More so, enhanced long-range fuel tanks with military-type polymer are also provided in some vehicles to support corridor driving range and anti-corrosive capability.

Hyundai Excel Fuel Tank Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a fuel tank on a Hyundai Excel?
A: On fuel injected models, relieve the fuel system pressure. Remove the fuel tank filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. If equipped, remove the fuel tank drain plug and allow the fuel to drain in an approved gasoline container. On later models, use a siphoning kit to siphon the fuel into an approved gasoline container. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. On 2006 and later models, unbolt and lower the center section muffler and exhaust pipe. Disconnect the fuel hoses or lines and the vapor return line. Clearly label, then detach the fuel feed, return, and vapor lines. Be sure to plug the hoses to prevent leakage and contamination of the fuel system. Support the fuel tank with a floor jack. Place a wood block between the jack head and the fuel tank to protect the tank. Remove the fuel tank strap bolts and the fuel tank protector if equipped. Swing the fuel tank retaining straps down until they are out of the way. On 1994 and earlier models, lower the tank enough to disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel gauge sending unit, which is located on the upper right side of the fuel tank. Remove the tank from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal. To replace the overfill limiter (two-way) valve, remove the overfill limiter mounting bolt. Detach the vapor hoses from the limiter and remove it. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  • Q: What precautions should be taken when repairing the fuel tank or filler neck on Hyundai Excel?
A: All repairs to the fuel tank or filler neck should be carried out by a professional with experience in this critical and potentially dangerous work. Even after cleaning and flushing the fuel system, explosive fumes can remain and ignite during tank repair. If the fuel tank is removed from the vehicle, it should not be placed in an area where sparks or open flames could ignite the fumes. Be especially careful in garages with gas-type appliances, as they could cause an explosion.
