    Q:
What steps should be followed for disassembling and reassembling the strut and spring assembly on Hyundai Santa Fe? Posted by Customer
    A:
Any wear or damage of the struts or coil springs, be it leakage, loss of damping ability, presence of physical damage, it is always advisable to think twice before doing anything because once the strut/shock absorber is damaged, it cannot be repaired; it has to be replaced. The strut assembly may include springs and in such a case, it is advised to know whether you can exchange them before, as it may save a lot of time, so always check the price and availability of the parts before disassembling the car. To disassemble, unbolt the strut and spring assembly, which should be secured to a wooden or raged padded vise, and should not be over tightened. Fit the spring compressor as per the manufacturer's recommendations to eliminate force from the upper spring seat, one can confirm this by shaking the spring. Loosen the damper shaft nut, then take off the nut and suspension support and check on the smooth working of the bearing and if not the best one should be installed. Ensure that the rubber of the suspension support has not deteriorated and if there is separation then replace it. Take out the upper spring seat off from the damper shaft and examine it of any sign of crack and its hardness, also take off the upper insulator. Ease the compressed spring off the assembly making sure that the pointed ends are not directed towards the operator and place it elsewhere. Pull off the rubber bumper and do the same with the lower insulator on the end of the damper shaft if it shows signs of wear. For reassembly if replacing the lower insulator, position it into place, pull the damper rod and place the rubber bumper in its correct position. Put coil spring down on the lower insulator with its end in the lowest level and then put insulator and spring seat in its right place, the flats of the damper shaft and the flats in the spring seat must be able to face each other. Bolt the holes in the upper spring seat with those in the lower and then fit the damper nut in place and tighten it to the standard torque then ensure the holes in the spring seats are still lined up then withdraw the spring compressor tool and fit the strut/spring assembly.
