The checking procedure is applicable only to 2006 and earlier models, while 2007 through 2012 2.0L models require special equipment and procedures that are not covered here. For 2011 and later 1.8L models and all 2013 and later models, the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is integrated into the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) module. To check the TPS, first locate it on the throttle body and disconnect the electrical connector by pushing in on the wire retainer. Use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance between terminal 2 and terminal 3 with the throttle plate closed, and if the resistance is within the specified range, proceed to the next test; otherwise, replace the TPS. Next, connect the ohmmeter between terminals 1 and 3 and slowly open the throttle plate, ensuring that the resistance value changes smoothly and proportionately; if it does not, replace the TPS. For replacement, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and the TPS electrical connector, then loosen and remove the retaining screws to detach the TPS from the throttle body, disengaging it from the throttle valve spindle. When installing the new TPS, ensure that the flat surface inside the TPS aligns correctly with the flat surface on the throttle valve spindle, then tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque, completing the installation in reverse order of removal.
