Check the fuel tank and fuel pump, listening for a whirring noise when the ignition is on. If silent, inspect the EFI fuse, circuit, relay, and fuel pump cut switch. If these are fine, examine the fuel pump wiring. Test fuel pressure by connecting a fuel pressure gauge between the fuel supply line and fuel rail. For return-type systems, check fuel pump operation and pressure with ignition on. If pressure is high, inspect the vacuum and fuel return hoses. If low, pinch the fuel return hose and replace the regulator if pressure increases. Disconnect the vacuum hose to check regulator operation. For returnless systems, measure fuel pressure while the engine is idling. If pressure is low, check the fuel supply hose and line, replace the fuel filter or fuel pump/regulator. If high, replace the fuel pump/regulator and diagnose the fuel system. After testing, relieve pressure, disconnect the battery cable, remove the gauge, reconnect the battery, and check for leaks.

To remove the rear seat, cut the carpet and padding below it to access the fuel tank. Remove the fuel pump/fuel level sensor floor service hole cover and disconnect the wiring. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the fuel lines. Remove the retaining bolts and carefully lift the fuel pump/fuel level sensor assembly from the fuel tank. Inspect and clean the fuel pump inlet strainer if necessary. Installation is the reverse of removal.

After removing the fuel pump/fuel level sensor from the tank, you can replace the entire assembly or individual parts. Drain residual gasoline and place it on a clean, well-ventilated workbench. Check the strainer for clogging and replace if necessary. Unclip the fuel pump from the assembly. Reassemble in reverse order and reinstall in the fuel tank.

Listen for the pump's sound when the ignition key is turned on. If the pump doesn't operate, use a fused jumper wire to apply battery voltage to the fuel pump test connector.

Remove the pump from the cylinder head.
