For carbureted models you should first remove the cable from negative terminal of the battery, engage the parking brake, chock the rear wheels and properly jack up the vehicle with jack stands. From under the car, take off the nuts that bolt the exhaust downpipe to the exhaust manifold, with penetrating oil to help in the removal and set the exhaust pipe and take off the gasket. Subsequently, it is necessary to disengage the air cleaner assembly as well as the electrical connector of oxygen sensor if the vehicle is equipped with it, and then disconnect it from the engine. After fixing the strike, use penetrating oil on the flare nuts of the air injection tube, then remove the tube from the manifold. Three bolts that attach the heat shield unto the exhaust manifold should be loosened and then the heat shield detached. Treat the threads of the nuts and bolts of the exhaust manifold, brackets, and component of the emission control system with penetrating oil; then, carefully slip the manifold off the studs. In terms of fit, gathered and reviewed all threaded fasteners, degasketing all facing surfaces before fitting a new gasket with the shields on the outside. Screw in the manifold nut on progressive, from the middle toward the outside in a turning manner to the torque suggested and replace the remaining components in a sequence in a reverse procedure, and start the engine to ensure exhaust leaks. With fuel injected models, lift the car on a jack and secure it on jackstands, then for any models, remove any engine splash shields. Now, turn off the four flange bolts and nuts that are attaching the lower end of the exhaust manifold to the exhaust system, then, set down the vehicle. Find and unplug the oxygen sensor connector, unscrew the heat shield, that is bolted to the exhaust manifold with three bolts, and find the location of the engine lifting bracket if present. Loosen the exhaust manifold nuts and then remove the manifold and taking with it the old gasket. To remove a Lincoln Town Car exhaust manifold, unscrew the twelve bolts but if you are installing a Lincoln Town Car exhaust manifold, follow the removal procedure in reverse while making sure that all exhaust manifold studs are not damaged or corroded and that the mating surfaces are clean while installing the new manifold gasket such that the gasket shields are facing out. Replace the lifting bracket and fasten the manifold retainer nuts to the requisite torque; then fit the front downpipe to the manifold using a replacement gasket and keeper nuts.
