    Q:
How important is it to have the headlights adjusted correctly on Hyundai Excel? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is crucial to have headlights adjusted correctly to avoid blinding oncoming drivers and to ensure optimal visibility on the road. Headlights should be checked for proper aim every 12 months and whenever a new headlight is installed or front-end body work is done. The adjustment procedure provides only a temporary fix until a professional can perform a proper adjustment. For models from 1986 to 1994, headlights have two adjusting screws: one on top for vertical movement and one on the side for horizontal movement, while models from 1995 onward have both adjusters on top. To adjust the headlights, find an open area with a blank wall and a level surface, then attach masking tape vertically to the wall in line with the vehicle's centerline and the centerlines of both headlights. Position a horizontal tape line in relation to the centerline of all headlights, ideally with the vehicle parked just a few inches away. The vehicle should be parked 25 feet from the wall, level, with a half-full gas tank and no heavy load in the trunk. For low beam adjustment, the high-intensity zone should be set two inches below the horizontal line and two inches to the side of the headlight vertical line, away from oncoming traffic. The adjustment for sealed beam models involves turning the top screw clockwise to raise the beam and counterclockwise to lower it, while the side screw adjusts the beam left or right. For bulb-type headlights from 1988 and 1989, the upper screw moves the assembly right or left, and the lower one adjusts it up and down. Models from 1990 to 1992 have the vertical adjuster on the top front edge of the housing and the horizontal adjuster near the lower outer corner. In 1993 and 1994 models, both adjusters are accessible through holes in the top of the housing. For 1995 models, one adjustment hole is on top and the other faces forward near the upper inner corner. From 1996 onward, both adjustment holes are above the housing, with the inner hole for vertical adjustment and the outer hole for horizontal adjustment, although horizontal adjustments on these models should be performed by a dealer. For 2006 and later models, only vertical adjustment is possible. With high beams on, the high-intensity zone should be centered just below the horizontal line, keeping in mind that low beams are more frequently used and critical for safety. It is advisable to have the headlights adjusted by a dealer or service station as soon as possible.
