To eliminate a 1986 through 2005 model, start by raising the front of the vehicle, putting it securely on jackstands, and applying the parking brake. Power steering pressure and return lines are removed, marked to maintain their relationship, and capped to prevent fluid loss. The lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt is taken out, tie-rod ends are separated from the steering knuckle arms, and rack and pinion housing clamp bolts are removed. As well as this, take off the longitudinal crossmember in 1995 through 2005 models, then lower the rack and pinion, separate the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion input shaft, and remove the rack and pinion from the vehicle. Now to install involves raising the rack and pinion, connecting the intermediate shaft, and installing gear housing clamps and bolts. Reconnect tie rod ends; install intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt; connect power steering pressure line fitting bolt; attach return hose; fill power-steering pump reservoir; bleed system. Then in the case of 2006 and later models, loosen front wheel lug nuts, then raise it onto jackstands after removing front wheels. And finally, disengage stabilizer bar links as well as tie rod ends, followed by detaching control arm ball joints from steering knuckles. Underneath the engine compartment, remove the engine under-cover, followed by disconnecting the power steering fluid return hose, drained then capped under it. Remove the power steering pressure line fitting bolt, next detach the universal joint between steering column shafts and pinion gears of the rack and pinion itself. For example, unbolt heat protectors or withdraw exhaust rubber hangers before taking through-bolts that link front mounts with rear ones away-thus lowering the subframe while supporting it at the same time. Additionally, remove rear engine mounting bracket bolts, undoing brackets themselves from the subframe of the car body part that holds these components together better than other types do for stability during operation due mainly to its weight distribution being towards the middle rather than at the ends. Disconnect power-steering pump pressurized hoses and remove them; for the 2012 models onwards, unplug the power assist motor's electrical connector at the rack and pinion side too. Undo rack and pinion mounting bolts and take it out. Installation is in reverse order of removal with refilling and bleeding required in power-steering systems.
