    Q:
How to remove the Clutch Disc and Release Bearing on Hyundai Elantra? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is most often reached with the clutch components by pulling out the transaxle while affording the engine to remain installed in the vehicle. If the engine is being or will be removed for major rebuild then the clutch should be also inspected for any wear and particularly if the engine or transaxle is out, then those relatively inexpensive clutch parts should be replaced unless they are new or almost new. First of all, it is necessary to unbolt the transaxle backed by supporting the engine, the best way is to use the engine support fixture or hoist, and place the piece of wood between the jack and oil pan to distribute the load. Care should be taken as pick up of oil pump is located just beneath the oil pan, any bent could result into starved oil supply. For any models other than 1.6L, the clutch fork and release bearing can remain clipped to the transaxle housing but for 1.6L the release bearing and the concentric release cylinder assembly are housed in the transaxle bell housing. During clutch disc extraction, additional support of the clutch disc should be provided by the clutch alignment tool inserted through the clutch disc hub. Check for indexing marks on the flywheel and the pressure plate and if there isn't any, make one yourself since it will aid in the correct installation. Start to ease the pressure plate to flywheel bolts and do this in a diagonal fashion until you have removed every bit of spring pressure, then, remove the pressure plate, the clutch disc, and the bolts. During routine inspection conduct a thorough inspection of the flywheel for crack and other deficiencies and where necessary, knurl the flywheel. Clutch disc lining should be above rivet heads at least 3/64-inch and any wear on the disc lining should be replaced. The clutch disc should also be recommended to be replaced together with the release bearing. Check the pressure plate to see if it is still in good condition, if not reconstruct the pressure plate. It should be noted that it is advised to clean the machined surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate with solvent, degreaser, and clean rags before the installation of the clutch. Align the clutch disc and pressure plate with the flywheel, and check whether you have correctly done it by using the alignment tool. Loosen up the pressure plate to fly wheel bolts up to the point that they almost come off then place the clutch disc and neatly tighten the bolts evenly, still in a criss-cross manner as this helps avoid the distortion of the plates. Then place the bolts properly tightening them to the right torque and then removing the alignment tool. Apply high temperature grease on the inner groove of the release bearing and the contact areas of the release lever and transaxle input shaft bearing retainer, finally, fit the clutch release bearing and all the other components that were removed before in their respective places.
