Some models are equipped with an anti-theft radio. Before performing a procedure that requires disconnecting the battery, ensure you have the activation code. Begin by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery. For 2000 and earlier models, open the hood, remove the clip and retaining pin, then detach the release cylinder push rod from the clutch release lever. Disconnect the hydraulic line at the release cylinder using a flare-nut wrench, having a small can and rags handy to catch any spilled fluid, and plug the line to prevent excessive fluid loss and contamination. Unscrew the bolts and remove the clutch release cylinder. For 2001 and later models, except 1.6L models, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then disconnect the hydraulic line at the release cylinder, again using a flare-nut wrench and being prepared for fluid spillage. Remove the two release cylinder mounting bolts and the release cylinder. For 1.6L models, note that the release bearing is integral to the concentric release cylinder and cannot be replaced separately. Locate the fluid hose connection at the concentric release cylinder on the left side of the transaxle, disconnect it, remove the clevis pin, and separate the hose. Remove the transaxle, then the concentric release cylinder mounting bolts and the release cylinder assembly. For installation on all models except 1.6L, lubricate the pocket in the release fork with multi-purpose grease for 2001 and later models. Install the release cylinder on the clutch housing and install the bolts, leaving them a little loose until the hydraulic line filling threads have been started. For 2000 and earlier models, connect the pushrod to the release lever and install the retaining pin, washer, and clip. For 2001 and later models, ensure the pushrod is seated in the release fork pocket. Connect the hydraulic line fitting to the release cylinder using fingers only at this time, then tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque and secure the hydraulic fitting with a flare-nut wrench. For 1.6L models, install the concentric release cylinder over the input shaft on the transaxle, then install the bolts hand tight, ensuring even pressure while tightening to the specified torque. Reinstall the transaxle, connect the fluid hose to the concentric release cylinder, and insert the clevis pin. The installation is the reverse of removal for all models. Check the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir, adding brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 specifications until the level is correct, then bleed the system and recheck the brake fluid level before reconnecting the negative battery cable.
