Camshaft and the lifters should always be checeked for wear or damage before being fitted and end play of camshaft should be checeked before removing. Hydraulic lifters in the models produced between 1996 to 2000 are self adjusting and do not need adjustment, but there is a process of checking noisy lifters. On vehicles after the year 2011, you should remove the camshaft carrier and put labels on the rocker arms and the lifters. A review of the cam timing chain and sprockets and their cleaning as well as replacement where there is excessive wear or damage. To install, it is recommended that the lifters be washed using clean engine oil, then the lifters are consequently fitted on their corresponding bores with the camshaft lobe contact surfaces well lubricated with clean engine oil. Proceed to lower the camshafts gently into their respective position with the tops of the lobes for the No. 1 cylinder upwards. Tighten the bearing caps to opposite ones, then to the next opposite ones, and for the 2011 and later version, use the special tightening pattern that was given above. Fit the timing belt or chain as appropriate and ensure that there is the correct alignment of the marks, and inspect, adjust or replace the variable valve clearance as the case may be. The rest of the installation is carried out in the reverse of the removal procedure with checks on valve clearances on certain models.

Measure the outside diameter of each camshaft bearing journal and record the measurements. Compare them to the specified journal outside diameter, then measure the inside diameter of each corresponding camshaft bearing. Subtract the cam journal outside diameter from its respective cam bearing bore inside diameter to determine the oil clearance for each bearing. If any measurements fall outside the specified wear limits, either the camshaft or the cylinder head, or both, must be replaced.
